Chapter Fifteen
Lucky tugged at the collar of his shirt as he drove up the long driveway to Deeâs house on Tuesday night. It was only a polo shirt â he hadnât gone all out and worn a button-down.
He was second-guessing himself about that. He was second-guessing himself about everything to do with this evening â right down to whether he should have suggested it in the first place. It was too late to back out now, though.
When Dee had mentioned that tonight was the peak night of the meteor shower, heâd spoken before he thought about it. Sheâd suggested that they could watch them from her house, but heâd had what, at the time, seemed like a great idea.
It still was a great idea, he told himself as he brought his truck to a stop in front of the house. He didnât know much about meteors, he wasnât sure that Dee did, either. But heâd noticed the way her eyes lit up when she talked about it. He didnât know if that was because it was something that was important to her son, or if she genuinely enjoyed watching â he smiled through pursed lips â watching the stars fall as she insisted on calling it.
His idea had been to drive her out to a spot that he and Echo had found on the road that led up out of town. There was a pullout and a viewing area just over the crest of one of the hills â folks around here called them mountains, but heâd grown up in Montana, and these werenât mountains.
Deeâs place had a good view of the open sky over the lake but to his mind, there was way too much light pollution. He and Echo had been up to the spot that he had in mind a few times. When they first arrived in town, he took her up there to walk before he was convinced that people wouldnât mind her being on the beach. Theyâd spent more than a few nights there, too â when the nightmares woke him, and he couldnât get back to sleep.
Cutting the engine, he looked up at Deeâs fancy house. What had he been thinking? She would probably be more comfortable here, sitting by her pool outside her pool house, than sitting in the back of his truck with him in the ass end of nowhere just off the side of the road.
He sucked in a deep breath and ran his sweaty palm over his thigh. Looking across at the passenger seat, he wished that heâd brought Echo. He should have brought her. Dee wouldnât mind.
He looked up when light flooded the circular driveway around him. The front door was open, and Dee stood there, looking out. The sight of her, silhouetted in the light from the big chandelier in the hallway shining behind her, made him smile. For all that he might be messing up and overthinking it, he knew damn well that he was living up to his name when it came to her.
